Corporate Workdays

Corporate Workdays take place during the summer and early fall months of the year. Corporations, civic groups, and congregations can arrange for a work day during one day during the week or on a Saturday. Rebuilding Together Pittsburgh identifies the home, develops the scope of work for the volunteers, supplies all the materials and oversees all the projects on work day. The volunteer group or organization makes a donation to the organization to cover the cost of materials and supplies needed for the home project. Most projects can be completed by unskilled volunteers and include painting, yard work, cleaning and some light carpentry. Please contact Steve Hellner-Burris to find out how your corporation can participate to help an elderly homeowner remain in their home. There are still a few opportunities available for August and September 2009.

A Busy Summer and Fall Schedule of Corporate Workdays

Between June and November 2009, RTP continues to host a number of Corporate Workdays. Corporate Workdays usually take place on Saturday's when corporations, congregations, and civic groups volunteer their time, skill and dollars to work in the home of an elderly homeowner. These workdays provided desperately needed repairs and modifications along with some yard clean up and weatherization. The elderly homeowners were thrilled and as one recipient stated, "Thank you for the great work. My home is dry and safe again and I can sleep easier at night."

During this time of year, the corporate work days allow us to continue working to meet the ever growing needs of the homeowners we serve. If you have a group of interested people and some resources and want to make a difference, please call our offices.

On a beautiful Saturday in June, the Monroeville Rotary Club started off our summer with a wonderful project in Monroeville. They spent the day helping renovate a kitchen, outside landscaping, painting and carpentry work. There project really made a difference as upon entering the property, our house captain noticed a large odor of gas. We immediately shut off the gas and called the gas company. We then had a plumber come in and put all new gas lines in the basement thus making the home safe again.

The week of July 27 once again brought more than 55 volunteers from Mt. Lebanon Presbyterian Church. These fine friends completed many projects in the homes of two elderly homeowners in Mount Lebanon and Dormont. The two teams of volunteers donated an entire week this summer to mission work and we were honored to have them on board with RTP. These projects included painting contrasting colors for a blind client as well as leveling floors so she could remain in her home and upgrading a bathroom and handicap sink so the other client could remain independent.

August 15 was a busy day in McKeesport as the Benedetti Family donated their time to assist a client with painting, new flooring and some plumbing upgrades. Additionally they spent time clearing the lawn.

On August 26, 27 students and staff from Helell Academy joined with RTP to facilitate the removal of hazardous concrete steps that will allow RTP to replace the steps that will meet code requirements and make a safe passage into the home.

On September 26, over 30 students from the Carnegie Mellon Cross Country Team will join RTP in assisting Hosanna House with landscaping and painting to benefit the children and youth that are served there daily.

RTP received two grants from our National Offices to provide two special projects in October. Final plans are underway to assist a veteran with window replacements, painting and some carpentry work through the Sears Heroes at Home program. The second grant will bring together employees of Lowes to renovate a kitchen and bathroom as well as painting windows at a home in Wilkinsburg.
