What is Rebuilding Together Pittsburgh? Rebuilding Together Pittsburgh repairs and renovates the homes of low-income, elderly homeowners and individuals with physical disabilities. It unites people of all walks of life in an effort to rebuild homes and repair lives. All home repair services are provided free of charge to qualifying homeowners. This is made possible by the generosity of corporations, civic groups, the Pittsburgh Building Trades, construction companies, schools, congregations and foundations. Traditionally, the major emphasis and largest portion of repair services occurred on National Rebuilding Day, the last Saturday in April. However, in 2000, RTP developed "Operation Urgent Care" a year round emergency repair program to provide critical home repairs to qualifying seniors. Elderly homeowners seeking assistance with emergency heating, electrical, plumbing and safety modification repairs can receive assistance. RTP's Programs at a Glance National Rebuilding Day Event takes place the last Saturday in every April. Over 1,000 skilled and non-skilled volunteers and contributors come together to repair and restore homes and neighborhoods throughout Allegheny County. All repairs and renovations are free and may include carpentry, plumbing, electrical, masonry, roofing, safety modifications, flooring, painting and yard cleanup. Operation Urgent Care provides free emergency repair services twelve months a year to qualifying homeowners in Allegheny County. Certified contractors are employed to complete modest projects such as plumbing leaks, furnace repairs, roofing repairs, minor electrical issues and safety modifications. Services based on funding availability. Corporate Workdays take place on certain Saturdays throughout the year. A corporation can arrange for volunteers to spend a Saturday working together at a preselected home in Allegheny County. Projects may include painting, yard work, cleaning and minor repairs. Please contact Steve Hellner-Burris to discover how your group can also impact the life of an elderly homeowner in Allegheny County. Top of page Why is Rebuilding Together Necessary? Many of our neighbors in Allegheny County have worked hard all their lives and have been active members of their community. Now, due to illness, financial limitations, high utility costs or any number of uncontrollable causes, they are unable to do the repair work in their homes to keep them safe, warm and dry. The result is often serious accidents or fall by the homeowner and deteriorating living conditions. Statistics show that over 60% of deaths of people over 65 are the result of a fall in the home and that 1/3 to 1/2 of all home accidents or falls can be prevented by making modifications to the home. Top of page What repairs are done?
