- What is Rebuilding Together Pittsburgh?
- Rebuilding Together Pittsburgh repairs and renovates the homes of low-income, elderly
homeowners and those with physical disabilities. It unites people of all faiths and walks of life
in an effort to assist people in need. Work is provided free of charge to the homeowner
through the generosity of corporations, local trade unions, foundations, utility companies,
schools, civic groups, hospitals and individuals.
Traditionally, the major emphasis and largest portion of repair services occurred on Rebuilding Day, which always takes place the last Saturday in April. However, in 2000, RTP developed “Corporate Workday” projects and developed “Operation Urgent Care” a year round emergency repair program. Special funding for year round services is provided by Foundations and special partnerships with local utility companies, the Allegheny County Area Agency and corporations. Elderly homeowners seeking assistance with emergency plumbing, roofing and electrical problems, and safety modifications can now receive repair assistance twelve months a year to alleviate the crisis.
RTP's Programs at a Glance
National Rebuilding Day Event takes place the last Saturday in every April. Over 1,000 skilled and non-skilled volunteers and contributors come together to repair and restore homes and neighborhoods throughout Allegheny County. All repairs and renovations are free and may include carpentry, plumbing, electrical, masonry, roofing, safety modifications, flooring, painting and yard cleanup.
Operation Urgent Care provides free emergency repair services twelve months a year to qualifying homeowners in Allegheny County. Certified contractors are employed to complete modest projects such as plumbing leaks, furnace repairs, roofing repairs, minor electrical issues and safety modifications. Services based on funding availability.
Corporate Workdays take place three Saturdays a year. A corporation can arrange for volunteers to spend a Saturday working together at a preselected home in Allegheny County. Projects may include painting, yard work, cleaning and minor repairs.

- Why is Rebuilding Together Necessary?
- Many of our neighbors in Allegheny County have worked hard all their lives and have been active
members of their community. Now, due to illness, financial limitations, high utility costs
or any number of uncontrollable causes, they are unable to do the repair work in their homes to
keep them safe, warm and dry. The result is often serious accidents or fall by the homeowner
and deteriorating living conditions. Statistics show that over 60% of deaths of people over 65
are the result of a fall in the home and that 1/3 to 1/2 of all home accidents or falls can
be prevented by making modifications to the home.
