warmth, safety and independence. Nationally, this organization was founded in 1988 and is the largest volunteer home rehabilitation initiative in America.

Traditionally, the major emphasis and largest portion of repair projects occurred on Rebuilding Day. However, in January 2000 RTP successfully developed a year round emergency repair program titled, "Operation Urgent care". Special funding for year round services are provided by Foundations and special partnerships with local utility companies, the Allegheny County Area Agency and corporations. Elderly homeowners seeking assistance with emergency plumbing, roofing and electrical problems can now find immediate repair assistance twelve months a year to alleviate the crisis.

What we do
One day each year, volunteers gather from all walks of life, ages and ethnic backgrounds to join forces. Armed with truckloads of donated materials, these volunteers paint, repair, renovate and install home safety modifications in homes and community centers. We encourage volunteering at the local level to aid low-income elderly homeowners and make a difference in the community.

Who we help
The majority of our clients are low-income elderly families who cannot maintain their homes. In addition, local non-profit community centers are eligible. All work is performed free of charge. Referrals are made from social service agencies, businesses, schools, hospitals, congregations, civic groups and the Area Agency on Aging.

Over 60% of older persons live in homes more than 20 years old. While a large majority (84%) of lower-income elderly owners own their homes outright, property taxes and utilities alone can cut

deeply into their incomes. Many of these homeowners do not have the expertise, ability, money, or the support networks to make any repairs or safety modifications.

Who are our volunteers
Anyone can volunteer! About 400 skilled trades people representing local trade unions volunteer their time and skills. In addition, 800 individuals representing corporations, civic groups, congregations, schools, and hospitals volunteer their time to improve the living conditions of homeowners in Allegheny County.
